Visual Breed Identification Disclaimer: Visual breed identification has proven to be inaccurate and unreliable! In addition, canine DNA testing is relatively new and none to our knowledge test for the American Pit Bull Terrier (the true Pit Bull) making DNA testing unreliable and inaccurate, by default. The fact is, unless you know the history, lineage/parentage, etc. we shouldn't be labeling the dogs and passing inaccurate info to the adopters, general public, and others.
The dogs we rescue from shelters come from an unknown background and most of our owner surrenders we take into our rescue organization, the owners are unable to prove the history of their dogs. Further more, several different breeds share similar characteristics as the American Pit Bull Terrier. Therefore, we are unable to guarantee the predominant and precise breed for our dogs! We will call our dogs the American Pit Bull Terrier when we know the lineage/history. We judge our dogs on their own individual behavior and personality! The young dog had severe puncture wounds along his head and neck—likely caused by being used as bait in an illegal dog-fighting venture. The volunteer—who wishes to remain anonymous—reached out to Danielle Reno, owner of the Mission, Kan.-based rescue group to ask if the team at Unleashed could handle Jax’s medical care. When Jax arrived at the facility, Reno knew instantly that the dog’s situation was dire. Discount Tires Flint MiShe transferred Jax to VCA Mission Animal Referral and Emergency Center, where veterinarians put him into intensive care.Spotlight Roman Blind Kit Reno reached out to local photographer and animal lover Jacob Meyer of New Friends Photography and asked him to document the group’s mission to save Jax. Meyer jumped at the opportunity to help, but when he saw the injured puppy for the first time, his heart sank. “Jax’s head was swollen like a balloon, so it made it hard for him to see me or the nurses. I decided to just rub his paw and talk with him for a few minutes before shooting video,” says Meyer. “Almost instantly, when he heard my voice his tail started to wag and thump the sides of the kennel. Although physically he had little strength, his spirit was very strong.” At the hospital, caregivers and volunteers showered Jax with love. Elizabeth, a woman who frequently volunteers with Unleashed, visited the puppy in the hospital as much as possible. “Every night Jax improved,” Elizabeth says in Meyer’s short documentary-style video. “Every night his tail would thump a little bit longer. Every night his eyes were opening and he was smiling.” After spending two weeks in the hospital, Jax was released and put into foster care with Kelsey Perdue. According to Meyer, who filmed Jax in foster care, his recovery accelerated with Perdue’s loving touch.
“After first meeting up with him and his foster mom about a week after he was released from emergency care it was to my amazement that he just seemed like a normal 5-month-old puppy,” he says. “Aside from his scars where the hair had not grown back over, you probably would never have guessed what he had been through.” Meyer hopes that Jax’s story inspires others to speak up if they suspect dog fighting in their communities. “Sadly, in the Kansas City area, there is a lot of cruelty and neglect,” he says. “A lot of the dogs we could have saved end up dying because people are too scared to speak up. I want to inspire people to stop turning away and try to make a difference.” Jax is fortunate that no one turned away. The puppy made a full recovery in foster care, and the volunteer who originally rescued him from that porch in Topeka decided to adopt him as her own. And despite an ugly, cruel start to his young life, Jax now has a loving home and a second chance.
