The door to the garage wasn’t shut tight on Friday. The two cats took advantage and got into the garage to have some feline fun. They were in the garage for less than 20 minutes. Evidently, fun for Cookie meant consuming a one foot long piece of fishing line that was laying on the garage floor. We did not know she had consumed the fishing line until Sunday morning. I was upstairs trying to finish my Casey article when Avalon yelled that she needed my help. I said with what? She said there was a six inch long piece of string hanging out of Cookie’s butt. My initial urge was to grab on and keep pulling. Avalon wouldn’t let me do that. She insisted we call the vet. Of course he agreed with Avalon. Dollar signs were flashing before his eyes. Nothing like an emergency weekend appointment with a vet. They kept her overnight and she eventually shit out the rest of the fishing line. Sadly, there wasn’t a flounder on the other end of the line. For the one night stay, some anti-biotic medicine that she spits out, and an emergency Sunday visit, I paid $220.

Her department supports organizations that are using Google Maps to visualize environmental and social issues all around the world — in this case, the Charles Darwin Foundation. The Galapagos team spent their time hiking trails, clambering across lava fields and venturing into the crater of a live volcano to capture 360-degree images of 10 locations on the islands — some chosen for their importance to marine conservation, some chosen because tourism isn't allowed there. They boated to Isabella Island to photograph the restoration of the land iguana population there, which had been decimated by invasive species but is now on the rise once again.

Hiking through North Seymour Island, they came within a couple meters of of iconic bird species like the blue-footed booby and the Great Frigatebird, which has a huge, heart-shaped throat sack to attract females. "We didn't realize what an early wakeup call we'd be getting," Seamster says. Cats don't need the amount of exercise and space that is so important for dogs and puppies, and while cats and kittens love to play and express natural behaviours, they don't tend to make as much mess either!   For entertainment, kittens especially enjoy toys. Inexpensive cat toys can be as simple as crumpled paper balls, paper bags, cardboard boxes, and ping pong balls.  Catnip and cotton balls in a sock knotted at the end can be a great cat toy. Cat furniture like cat trees and scratching posts are also great, and you can even get 'cat furniture' these days - like a cat house or even a cat condo.   You can search for these and other cat accessories - cat beds, cat carriers etc online or from your local pet store here. 

You could even try making a scratching post with basic materials like sisal, cardboard or wood. A kitten or cat can teach children responsibility while also helping develop their social and nurturing skills.  Basic cat and kitten care also requires that you look after their health by providing: good quality cat food; veterinary care such as cat vaccinations, desexing, and microchipping.
