Mickey Ellison is typically standing up near the court, Nicole is usually cheering from the stands and young Mehki, 11, is sometimes on the bench distributing water for the older guys. Having that strong support system from his parents and younger brother is why junior point guard Malik Ellison was able to make All-State for football and basketball. He is also the 2016 Flint Journal Dream Team Player of the Year for boys basketball. “Let me tell you why he’s so good, his daddy trained and worked him out ever since he was a little kid,” said Ellison’s mother, Nicole. “He put him in everything. He traveled around everywhere with him. When I say his dad put in that work, he really did.” Mickey Ellison graduated from Beecher High School in 1990. He played basketball for legendary Beecher coach Moses Lacy then baseball at Texas College. Mickey handed his oldest son Malik a basketball as early as five-years-old but didn’t allow him to play competitively until he turned 10.

At 5-foot-8, Ellison is already a two-time state champion at Beecher. He will return as one of the frontrunners to win Michigan’s Mr. Basketball next season. “I don’t even think he seen his size,” Mickey said. “He just used to get out there and play. I was always hard on him anyway.” Malik grew up near Mott Park. He rarely ever went anywhere without a ball. In addition to sports, Ellison also holds a 3.5 grade point average. Division I schools such as Detroit Mercy, Dayton, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, and Southern Mississippi are strongly recruiting Ellison but he hasn’t landed an offer yet. He still hasn’t decided on whether or not he wants to pursue football or basketball on the college level, either. Ellison’s play garnered national attention in the postseason as he helped Beecher win its third Class C state title in four seasons. In the semifinals match at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, he drilled a buzzer-beating 3 to beat Detroit Loyola 60-59 on Thursday, March 24.

The shot reached No. 6 on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays then he posted 21 points with three rebounds versus Grandville Calvin Christian in the state finals. Beecher won the championship game 63-61 on Saturday, March 26, ending the season 25-2 overall. “This year, every game we had to win with a different style,” said Beecher coach Mike Williams. “That’s one thing that I’m proud of that we were able to install different styles and our kids were able to execute and not to mention the blessings that we had along the way.” Ellison averaged a team-high 21.5 points, five assists, and 2.5 steals in his junior season. He emerged as the leader in all the big regular season games. He put up 28 points in a head-to-head battle versus U of D Jesuit’s Mr. Basketball winner Cassius Winston. He also posted 24 points with six assists versus East English, scored 24 points against River Rouge and has only lost seven games as a three-year varsity player. Winning another title will take hard work but Ellison already has a plan for how to keep the streak going.

“In the summer time I’m going to get with a group of guys that’s going to come up next year and keep on working with them,” Ellison said. “I’m going to tell them that we’re going on for something totally different and we’re trying to break records.”4211 Rawlins Street #419 Dallas, TX 75219 $454,900 1750 Trace Bella Court Westlake, TX 76262 $6,298,880 5007 Purdue Avenue Dallas, TX 75209 $915,000 6810 Delmeta Drive Dallas, TX 75248 $599,000 6811 Dartbrook Drive Dallas, TX 75254 $950,000 area known as Northeast Tarrant County includes the communities of Bedford, Euless, Hurst, North Richland Hills, Richland Hills,This area is one of the fastest growing... 4536 Overton Terrace Cou 6813 Honey Creek Lane View All Just Listed Properties Why create an account?
