They were rescued last month from a home after a concerned citizen tipped off deputies saying they had witnessed deplorable conditions at the house. When the dogs first arrived to the shelter, they were malnourished and some even had worms. Their owner, Stephanie Saunders was charged with animal cruelty, but Sgt. James Cooper with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office said she was licensed to run a kennel.
Nearly a month later, WTVR CBS 6's Chelsea Rarrick checked in on how the 34 puppies and 34 dogs were doing. The puppies have gotten much bigger and have been well taken care of. The shelter even gave us a look at the five week old chocolate lab puppies. The sheriff's office can't currently comment on the case, but said they've received around 25 calls a day at the shelter with people asking how to adopt. Tabitha Treloar, with the Richmond SPCA said to prevent overcrowding in the shelter, their admissions team visits the shelter on a weekly basis. "We pull dogs in their care who are already available for transfer or adoption who can be transferred here," she said. Depending on the outcome of the case, Hanover officials are hoping to have the dogs available for adoption in July. In the meantime, the shelter is still accepting donations as it costs around $225 a day to care for the nearly 70 extra animals. Here is a list of the most needed items:
