Ask a QuestionAbout Cocker Spaniels taytay1000oneAre most Cocker Spaniels "hunting dogs"? I'm wanting to get a buff Cocker Spaniel, but I have 2 macaws, and 4 parakeets. I will be crate training and taking the puppy to classes. I just wanted to know if I should separate them or just find out another technique? 3 CommentsAnonymousCocker Spaniels are in the hunting group of dog breeds because they were bred for hunting, however, that does not mean that every Cocker Spaniel has the ability to be a hunting dog. If you are getting your's from a breeder that hunts with his/her dogs, then your dog will have more hunting instinct then a show-bred or companion-bred dog. However, if you are getting your dog from a rescue/shelter, then most likely you will be getting a more companion-bred dog.

Please remember that all dogs have what is called "prey-drive" this is the drive that dogs have to chase thing that are moving. AnonymousSo, using a crate and positive reinforcement methods, you will be able to teach your new dog how to behave around your birds correctly. I suggest tethering your dog to you using a leash if your dog is not in a crate while you are in the house to start off. Contacting your local positive reinforcement trainer, they will give you the tools you need to teach your dog to be calm around the birds. However, you must understand that your birds will be more agitated for a while since they are not used to a dog in the home. Separation of the birds and dog is best for the first little bit until everyone is calm enough to work on training.AnonymousIf you have birds I would not get a bird dog. Cockers are bred to flush birds out of fields to be shot. I have had cockers most of my life and have taken care of parrots for friends when they were out of town. More than once the large cage was knocked over.

I visited another friend who has a 35+ year old Parrot and she told me to keep my cocker away from the floor to ceiling cage because Roscoe would bite her. Do not get a bird dog if you have birds. AnonymousI had to put my 8-year-old Cocker down due to seizures, how can I prevent this from happening again? My Cocker Spaniel has been having seizures for about 4 years. 2 CommentsAnonymousCocker Spaniel's are known for seizure problems. Getting a puppy from a reputable breeder who screens for seizure problems is the only way to find a puppy that has the best chance of not having seizure problems. Your vet now is the only one that can help, as he/she can give your dog medication for her seizures.AnonymousWe lost our Cocker/Lab mix to seizures at 3 yrs old. It broke our hearts to see him succumb to this horrible disease. We would love to have another Cocker, but will our next one die from this too?AnonymousDifference between Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Cocker Spaniel I was sold a cocker spaniel but when I received the puppy the papers show the dad and mom were ckcs?

3 CommentsAnonymousCavalier King Charles Spaniels are more eager to please and I think they are smaller in size. AnonymousIts true that the Cavalier Kings are smaller, and they are strictly lap dogs. Cocker Spaniels, not so much. They like to do things, such as sniff out prey, (they have a great nose) and are naturally good watch dogs. My male cocker will let me know when someone drives up, and the sound of his bark lets me know if he is familiar with my visitor or not. The Cavalier King may bark at a stranger, but he doesn't take his watchdog duties as seriously as the Cocker. AnonymousI agree with 8/6/2014 statement 100%. I had my Cavalier for 3 years before I actually heard her bark and was the most polite, lady like bark I've ever heard. I had too look around to figure out where this really low almost melodic little woo-woo-woo was competing from. When I looked at her, I was shocked to see it was my Cavalier, since she had never barked before.......Cockers, fifth, yep they keep you informed.

I've had Cockers for 35+ years and they let you know what's happening in your front yard AND have different barks for different people as anonymous noted above. Mine even have a different bark for the pizza delivery guynoahvincent47What breeds are known to be playful, also calm or mellow energy? 1 CommentAnonymousPlayful, but calm or mellow breeds include but are not limited to Papillon, some Labrador Retrievers, Newfoundlands, Pugs, French Bulldogs, Pitbulls, Pitlabs, Great Danes, Beagles, Boston Terriers, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, and especially Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.AnonymousMy six year old Cocker has a scab like matter that builds up on his nose. 1 CommentAnonymousYour vet is the only one that can help you with this. It can be anything from a scar to a bacterial disease on the nose of your dog.
