on August 12, 2012 at 1:55 PM, updated HUBBARDSTON, MI — How detectives solved an Ionia County murder mystery will be the subject of a television documentary tonight. Investigation Discovery will air "Silent Night, Violent Night” tonight at 9 p.m. The hour-long “Nightmare Next Door” series episode delves into the 2006 death of 80-year-old Bernita “Billie” Cunningham of Hubbardston, who was found dead in her home amid shattered Christmas decorations seven years ago. Cunningham’s death was originally thought to be accidental, but later was determined to be a homicide after her family insisted it was no mishap. Police eventually identified a suspect — Justin Stephens, who was 17 in 2006 and lived across the street from Cunningham in Hubbardston, a small town in northeast Ionia County. Stephens moved to Texas shortly after the death and was arrested there in 2010. Last July, a judge ordered a mandatory life sentence for Stephens. Authorities said Stephens lived across the street from Cunningham and went to her home to steal money after watching the woman leave on Nov. 30.
She returned, caught him inside, investigators said. He stabbed her several times and fled. A jury took three hours to return a guilty verdict last summer. The family hired a private investigator and police eventually reopened the investigation. Cunningham’s body was exhumed by a pathologist two months after her death but the results were inconclusive.
