Getting there requires an hour-long, arduous drive on dirt roads, but the rewards are great. Few people are willing to make the drive, which means that you'll find sparse crowds on this 2,280-acre lake and mor ethan 100 miles of mountain biking and hiking areas with unrestricted, open access to single-track trails. Public Campgrounds The U.S. National Forest Service owns public campgrounds at different elevations on or around Lake Pillsbury. They include Navy Camp, a seldom-used, sunny campsite area at the end of Gravelly Valley Air Strip;

Sunset Point, set alongside the lake but lacking lake views; Fuller Grove, a shady campground and one of the few RV-friendly campgrounds around the lake; and Pogie Point, another campground set among pine trees. All campsites are primitive and without electricity and sometimes water. Most are suitable only for tent camping. Private Campgrounds The remote nature of Lake Pillsbury means that few tourists come here to camp. This resort offers full-service camping with RV hookups, propane and supply sales, a playground and boat rentals. Since it is the only fuel provider on the lake, campers with boats will have all of their needs met here. Campsites are back-in only and some are within easy access of the lake. Leashed dogs are welcome to enjoy the property and the lakefront beach area. Disbursed Camping If you have a dog, one of your best bests for camping at Lake Pillsbury are the open forests areas along the Eel River, which feeds the lake. This is known as “disbursed camping,” and the Forest Service allows anyone to camp in the public forest for two weeks at a time, up to 30 days a year.

Dogs enjoy this area because they can live a bit freer without the restriction of leashes or play area boundaries. /dow/pacficsw/mendinfo.htm#addresses) to find out some of the best spots. For the health of the forest, the Forest Service recommends that campers stay in areas previously frequented by others. Things to Know Lake Pillsbury is a power-sports lake and although fewer people camp there compared with its southern neighbor, Lake Mendocino, you can expect a level of noise and activity that typically accompanies gas-powered water sports. Other popular sports at the lake include off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding, since the Forest Service has numerous OHV campgrounds in surrounding public lands. Additionally, campers should be aware that all public land in the area outside of developed campgrounds is open to hunting. Visitors are allowed to carry and discharge firearms as long as they do so in a responsible, safe manner. Forest Camping: Mendocino National Forest: Campground ListU.S.
