Toilet Wax Ring Solvent

The wax ring at the base of a toilet creates a seal and protects your floors. If you've ever replaced a toilet, you likely discovered that the wax ring that creates a seal between the toilet base and your flooring had become worn down and dirty over years of use. Old or damaged seals cannot be reused; cleaning the ring may warp the wax and result in an improper seal. Instead of reusing the ring, discard it and install a new, clean seal in its place. During the removal process, you may find residue on the surrounding flooring; removing the sticky spots ensures that they area will not become a dust collection. Put on disposable rubber gloves to protect yourself from wax residue. Turn off the water supply valve located on the side or bottom of your toilet tank. Flush several times to empty the tank and unscrew the toilet water supply line, aiming the line into a bucket or bowl to catch water. Lay a towel on the floor a short distance away from your work area. Place the towel far enough away to give you space to work but close enough that you can easily transfer the toilet to it.

Most models require that you unscrew two bolts on either side of the base of the toilet. Remove the tank cover and place it on the floor out of the way. Grip the toilet on each side of the bowl and gently tip it from side to side to release it from the wax ring. Lift the toilet and place it on the towel. Pull up the old wax ring. If you can't pull up the ring using your hands, slide a plastic putty knife between the ring and the floor and pry the ring up gently. Place the old ring into a plastic grocery or storage bag before placing it in your trash. Plug the open drain pipe with a large rag while you clean the surrounding area to avoid exposure to fumes. Scrape up large pieces of leftover wax with your putty knife. Wipe the wax from the knife with a rag. Pour a generous amount of mineral spirits onto a clean rag. Scrub the floor around the location of the old wax ring, being careful to avoid unnecessary contact with additional flooring. Dry the area with a towel or rag before installing the new wax ring.
