BUNKIE, La. (KALB) - New plans for the Bailey Hotel in Bunkie are underway. A nonprofit in Avoyelles Parish wants to make a huge change from the iconic structure's original use. "When you think of Bunkie, most people can immediately relate to the Bailey Hotel right off the bat,” said Doug Selman, the contractor for “Evergreen Safehouse Phase 2.” While the hotel, built in 1907, has been out of business for several years, leaders of Evergreen Safehouse, a faith-based domestic violence shelter in Evergreen, said they have bigger and better plans for the building. “It just struck me as a prime opportunity to be involved in something that's really important to the community and to the state,” said Selman.

Annette Goudeau, Chief Executive Office of Evergreen Safehouse, plans to buy and renovate the hotel to transform it into a safe place for women and children who have fallen victim to domestic abuse. The Bailey is up for sale now, but Goudeau and her crew at Evergreen Safehouse are working to raise enough money through donations and grants to buy the building by August 1, 2016. Providing a safe place for battered women and children, and possibly men in the future, is what Goudeau believes she’s meant to do. There's a lot of women that need a lot of help. We need to change the way they think,” she said. Goudeau was abused herself when she was younger, but she got out of the situation and realized there is hope. She overcame that obstacle, and now she is working to expand her current safehouse, which has five bedrooms, into the Bailey, which has 38 rooms. The plans for the new safehouse include security systems and guards, a full-scale kitchen, a workout room, play room for the kids, an aviary, and many more amenities.

Evergreen Safehouse will also work with the women to get them back on their feet with workforce development programs, job training, and certifications. Goudeau and other leaders at the safehouse, like Chef and Executive Vice President Leah Howard, said the Bailey Hotel is the perfect place for a safe transition for abused women and children. "People here respect the property, the hotel,” said Howard. “They'd rather see it be vacant than to go, but if you put something in it that's going to help the community, then I think everybody's behind it." It's a cause Selman said made it easy for him to jump on board. "To me, they've dedicated their lives to these women to make sure they have a life and a future,” said Selman.Evergreen Safe house needs your help.
