JK Tyre had identified South East Asia as their focus market but the global slowdown has resulted in these plans being put on hold. The global slowdown has pushed down prices of natural rubber and owning a plantation would not be more beneficial than sourcing it through long-term contracts. A plantation would only benefit in sourcing rubber for the company but would be ineffective in determining market rates.

“We had been exploring but at the moment we are rethinking about it. We are having second thoughts as to whether we should at all enter (plantation) or not,” said Raghupati Singhania, chairman and managing director of JK Tyre. A major reason why JK Tyre abandoned plans to purchase a rubber plantation is believed to be the reduction in the number of automobiles hitting the road. “The issue is the wisdom of getting into plantation. It’s only quantity that I would be securing while prices would have to be market-led as each plantation has to be a profit centre. No business unit would subsidise another business. If I can secure supplies by some other long-term contact why should I bother to get into plantation,” added Singhania. The company currently sources its natural rubber through imports or locally, and has a market share of 25 per cent. This makes JK Tyre India’s largest truck and bus tyre manufacturer. However, tyre makers in India are worried about the acute shortage of natural rubber in the country. Incessant rains in Kerala have hampered the tapping of rubber and the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) has termed the market as quite precarious as the cost of natural rubber in India defies the global trend. Rubber production in June has dropped to around 35,000-40,000 tonnes against ATMA’s estimate of 64,000 tonnes. Despite seasonal variations in production, consumption of natural rubber remains steady, which has forced manufacturers to import rubber.

This shortage of natural rubber in the domestic market has led JK Tyre to turn its attention to its plantation in Mexico in a bid to secure equipment manufacturing deals. Mexico has always been seen as JK Tyre’s back-door entry into the US but Singhania believes it will give an added focus to the South American market. “Internationally, we are strengthening our position with Mexico becoming more and more important now. We have just started supplying to marquee names such as Volkswagen, Chrysler and Nissan as OEM suppliers,” he said.
