When my husband and I got married in 2008, we had just added Bella, our American Eskimo Dog to our fur-family that already consisted of two horses. Then, Thanksgiving of 2009 we rescued our first Siberian Husky from a kill shelter here in North Carolina. It didn't take us long to realize that we had fallen in love with Nordic dog breeds and decide that we wanted to help them. Here in North Carolina, there is a epidemic of homeless Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, and American Eskimo Dogs because of people wanting these beautiful dogs and getting them without actively researching them. As wonderful as these breeds are, they are not for everyone and have several personality quirks that need to be considered.

After seeing how wide spread this problem is, we officially founded South Heartland.Though we specialize in Nordic breed dogs and horses, any animal in need is welcome here at South Heartland.
