An organisation which loans prom wear to youngsters completely free of charge is having an open day. Lesley Haddrell and Sam Allwood set up A Moment In Time to help families who would find it difficult to afford expensive outfits for their children to wear to school proms. Now they have built up a collection of hundreds of dresses, tiaras, bags and shoes for girls, as well as suits for the boys. The pair run A Moment In Time as a not-for-profit organisation. They do not charge families a penny for their services, and organise their own fundraising events to cover the cost of renting their unit at Houldsworth Mill in Reddish , Stockport . Members of the public, bridal and formal wear businesses and other organisations donate dresses and suits - many of which are still brand new - on the understanding that they are loaned out to youngsters from low income families free of charge. Last year, they were able to help students from across Stockport, and are now expanding to help young people from all over the region. Lesley said: “Our own daughters’ prom dresses were hanging in the wardrobe for years, and we just thought there should be somewhere we could take them so someone could use them. “I think people still find it hard to get their heads around the fact that we don’t charge anything at all.
