Prom shopping season, that is. Across the Southland, boutique dress shops such as Peaches on the southwest side, That Girl in Worth and Kimberly Bond in Orland Park are gearing up for an influx of teens with access to cash; in many cases, a lot of cash. Prom dresses, what with their fancy options such as sequins, sweetheart necklines, tulle layering and satin fabrics, are not cheap. As the mother of two daughters, both of whom went to two proms each, trust me on this. Sure, it was fun shopping with them for a dress that reflected their tastes and style, that complimented their hair color and figure, and that made them feel magical. But dropping hundreds of dollars each time? That was years ago, and the dresses are still hanging in their closets. A teal-blue ball gown, a wine-colored evening dress, a peach sequined number and a satin purple gown. Many times I commented while rifling through said closets, "These gowns are too pretty to spend the rest of their days in plastic."People who know me know that over the past year, I have been on a mission to de-hoard the house.
You can amass a lot of stuff in a lifetime, even when you're trying not to. Though we still have a ways to go, the past months have been productive and I breathe easier knowing we have lightened the load considerably. We've shredded old bank statements and garage-saled toys and purses. We've donated bags and bags of clothes to local charities, jigsaw puzzles and board games to local nursing homes, vases to florists and shoes to outfits that ship to developing countries. But the ball gowns are still here. For a few days anyway. Soon, they'll be whisked off to a new ball via a girl who is equal parts beautiful and frugal. This month, three local high schools are hosting prom resale events. All of the schools — Mother McAuley on Chicago's southwest side, Lockport and Oak Lawn — are seeking gently used gowns that are clean and ready to wear. The purpose of each sale is to give less-privileged girls, teens who can't afford to buy gowns retail, a chance to get into the prom game. They are also opportunities for savvy shoppers to save big.
While Oak Lawn High School is seeking donated dresses, which will then be sold for a flat price of $10, both McAuley and Lockport are using a different set up. At those schools, sellers can set their own price and reap most of the selling cost, with a fourth of it going back to the school."Deer Stands For Sale In Waco TexasWe do this to offer a service to girls who might not be able to afford a dress. Wfp T ShirtWe don't want that to be the reason they don't attend prom," said Beverly Nunn, co-president with Lorena Perez of the Mother McAuley Mother's Club, which sponsors the sale.Ge Warehouse Sale In PasigNunn said contributors to McAuley's Graduation and Prom Dress Sale can suggest a price range, such as "start at $200, but willing to go down to $150."
If a gown sells, the seller receives 75 percent of the final price. The other 25 percent goes to the Mother's Club, which organizes scholarships for students and provides a class gift to the school each year, Nunn said."You set the price, we tag the dress," Nunn said. Volunteers set up the sale area, which is arranged to look and work like a boutique, replete with dressing rooms, full-length mirrors and waiting areas for parents. The dresses are arranged by size."We have fun pretending we are salespeople," Nunn said.McAuley is also seeking used white gowns for this year's graduating class. The school has been offering the prom dress resale for at least eight years, Nunn said. Sometimes there are hundreds of dresses available. Last year, we were worried. We only had a few dresses days before the sale," Nunn said. "But we prayed and prayed, and ended up with over a hundred."Dresses can be dropped off at McAuley from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
