Student’s artwork wins district, advances to state competition Every year there are various poster contest opportunities available for young adults to participate in.

This year RH 10th grader, Janelle Slomba, entered the Ladies Auxiliary VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) national Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. Each entry is first judged in a local chapter; if it wins that region, it’ll move on to the state level, and if it wins that, it will move to the national level. Janelle Slomba won the Medina Chapter. Her piece was sent to the Department of NY VFW for judging at the State level, which will take place in June. This year’s theme is: “What Patriotism means to me.” In answer to that question, Janelle choose the election process. “Patriotism can be expressed in art in an infinite amount of ways. I believe the Patriotic process should be respected worldwide, as it represents the blood, sweat and tears used to make the United States the country it is today. I see the election process as a great example of patriotism. In my mind my poster is the visual interpretation of the patriotic process at work.” Janelle received a cash award for her entry.
