Darcel Rivers, 35, who lived in Rhode Island, was shot once in the back of the head during a robbery, said his father, Darren Rivers, who was at the scene this morning.

Rivers was visiting his children and his mother, the fire chief said. "I grew up in this city and it's just too much," Chief Rivers said. "The senseless killing has got to stop." According to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, the 35-year-old was found on the Fulton Avenue near Van Cleef Street with an apparent gunshot wound to the head at 3:45 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 4:15 a.m. at the Jersey City Medical Center. The fire chief said his son was shot while walking to his mother's home on Fulton after he spent some time hanging out with friends a couple blocks away. "He was on the phone with his girlfriend and said 'I'm being robbed,' and then the phone went dead," said Darren Rivers, who added the his son's phone and money were taken. The fire chief said Darcel graduated from Johnson and Wales University, and worked as a chef. He was a father of four children, ages 2, 3, 4 and 13. "He was just walking home, minding his own business," the chief said.

Rivers said he had not seen his son since Darcel arrived in town Tuesday. They had planned to get together this weekend, the chief said. "Homicide came to my house this morning and I closed the door on them," said the victim's mom, Deloris Gibson. "When you hear homicide, you already know. We want the person who did this to get justice. This is just senseless." This morning about a dozen family members and friends were mourning at Gibson's home, including the chief. The murder is the second in eight days in Jersey City. On May 27, a 50-year-old city man was shot on Sackett Street while he was repairing a car. Authorities said the man, Larry Freeman, was not the intended target. "I've lived here 26 years and it's not unusual, but seeing a lady just got shot on the other side, you would think something like this would not happen again," said Shawn, a Fulton Avenue resident, referring to a shooting on Stegman Street on May 27. Another resident on the block, Sursain Gobin, said "This really scares me.
