Adopted from a high-kill shelter as a teenaged kitten just before scheduled euthanasia, Sorrel was a dilute blue-cream tortie Siamese mix with deep blue eyes.  Her mischievous outgoing personality personified “Tortitude.”  Sorrel was sweet and funny, but suffered from underlying medical conditions that may have led to her having been surrendered in the first place:  Asthma, stomatitis, food allergies, and more seriously, cardiopulmonary inflammatory issues that contributed in no small way to her final illness.  While Paula, an experienced owner and cat rescue foster, could afford Sorrel’s care, she realized that other owners/foster parents would not be so fortunate, and cats with Sorrel’s conditions would quickly deplete a rescue’s or future owner’s finances. There are many more kittens in the world than there are homes for them.
In fact, you may be surprised to find just what you have been looking for at your local animal shelter. While there may be many Siamese kittens for adoption, no one can save every one of them. It is difficult to choose between several knowing that those you don't choose may be euthanized. It is important to keep your emotions in check and keep in mind what you are willing and able to handle. Rescue and adoption are not necessarily low cost options for procuring a Siamese cat. The fees are often quite high. People adopt these animals to save their lives - not to save money. Any shelter pet will more than likely come with emotional baggage. Many of these animals have been neglected, abandoned and abused. They may distrust humans completely and want to keep their distance. Even the smallest kitten may have learned the world is a rough place. You will need to have patience with your new kitten. She may need extra time to adjust and get settled. There may be health problems to deal with, or she may not get along with your other pets.
You have to be willing to stay the course with your new kitten and eventually things will begin to work out. Another thing that many people don't consider when looking at Siamese kittens for adoption is that the kittens may not be completely Siamese. While it is possible to find kittens in an animal shelter that come with registration papers, it is not very probable. If this is something that matters to you, an adopted kitten may not be right for you. Most rescue and humane organizations will provide the following: Most rescue and adoption facilities have certain requirements that you must meet in order to adopt a cat or kitten. They vary from organization to organization, but here are the most common: Siamese Rescue is an organization that literally rescues Siamese cats and kittens from shelters before they can be euthanized. Volunteers travel to various shelters near their homes and take possession of the Siamese cats and kittens that they find. These animals are most often treated by a vet for medical conditions, and then they're taken to a foster home to await adoption.
Siamese Rescue is a 501 (c-3), not-for-profit organization. They are able to exist on donations that are tax deductible. Each Siamese Rescue is a separate organization with different by-laws and ways of doing things. You will probably be asked to fill out an application, answer some questions and pay a small fee. The paperwork allows the organization to be reasonably sure that the kitten is going to someone who will commit to loving and caring for it. Local shelters, the local Humane Society, S.P.C.A. and even the city animal control center are all good places to search for Siamese kittens. Keep an eye on the newspaper classified ads as well. The following Internet sites specialize in Siamese rescues and adoptions. It takes a special, compassionate person to adopt a pet of any sort from a shelter.
