Toilet Bowl Fizzies

Freshen things fast with toilet fizzies that clean and eliminate smells. And (ahem) this solution is much better than lighting a match. Personalize with your favorite scents and your bathroom will be the best-smelling spot in your home. Stash in a cute container on your commode and simply drop in a small fizzy when needed. 1 cup baking soda 1/4 cup citric acid 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide 15 to 20 drops essential oil Add the baking soda to a mixing bowl and use a fork to break up any clumps. Baking soda naturally cleans and eliminates icky odors, making it the perfect base for the fizzies. Add the citric acid, or powdered produce preservative, which you can find near the canning supplies at your local grocery store, and give things a stir. The citric acid adds the oomph to these cleaners. In a small glass, mix together the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, which work together to help clean your commode. Now drop by drop, add the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide to the baking soda.

If you add the liquid all at once, you'll have a huge mess due to the reaction between the baking soda and citric acid! Now add the essential oil and gently mix. Any fragrance works wonderfully, but something fresh like wintergreen, lemongrass, or lavender leaves a wonderful lingering scent. Use a one-half teaspoon to scoop and mold the mixture into small half rounds and then tap onto a parchment-covered sheet pan. You can spritz the rounds with equal parts vinegar and water to create a crust, which helps hold them together. Let dry for at least four hours or overnight. Place the dried fizzies in a sealable glass jar and keep next to your commode, making sure to stick on a label so they aren't mistaken for breath mints! The next time things get smelly, after flushing, drop in a tablet and you'll love how things freshen up in no time. Makes around 30 small fizzies. I used to buy those toilet cleaning bleach tablets that you drop into the tank, and while they worked pretty well, the overwhelming smell of bleach was just too much to handle. Plus, I don’t think inhaling bleach vapors is very good for your health. I started researching for more natural ways to clean the toilet without the use of harsh chemicals, and came across a few different recipes that talked about making toilet ‘fizzies’, kind of like my homemade bath salt fizzies.

I loved the idea of being able to make a fizzy I could drop into the toilet bowl that would clean and freshen, but decided to just make it even easier and keep it in its powder form, rather than molding them into fizzies. This way, I can keep it in a small jar and just add a scoop to the toilet bowl when it was time to clean. Natural Fizzy Toilet Bowl Cleaning Powder Recipe If you’ve already been making your own homemade dishwasher detergent, you will likely have these ingredients on hand. The combination of citric acid and baking soda are the magic behind the ‘fizziness’, and will help make your toilet bowl sparkle after cleaning. 2 cups baking soda – (I buy a big bag of baking soda from Amazon because I use it for a ton of different recipes) 2/3 cup citric acid 20-30 drops of Essential Oil of choice – (Optional, but I love combining lemon and orange for a nice, clean citrus smell) Mix the citric acid and baking soda together in a small bowl.

Make sure to break up and clumps the baking soda might have. Add your essential oils and mix well. Store powder in an air-tight jar. Use 1 tablespoon of powder and drop into toilet bowl (not the tank!). Let the mixture fizz and do it’s magic. Use a toilet brush to scrub bowl if needed. Wait until the mixture has stopped fizzing before flushing the toilet. To Make Them Into Fizzies If you would really like to make this recipe into individual fizzies, simply follow the same recipe above, but take a misting spray bottle with water in it to lightly mist the powder mixture until it starts to turn into a wet sand consistency. Once the consistency is right, you can use a 1/2 teaspoon to scoop out the mixture, firmly pack it down, and drop onto a sheet of parchment paper to dry, or use a silicone mold to press the mixture into. Once you have formed your fizzies, let them dry for about 24 hours. Store in an air-tight jar, or Ziploc bag, and use 1 fizzy per cleaning.
