To my surprise, he came out with 3 nails saying that since the tyres were tubless, I would not have noticed the punture. 2 months later, I went to another puncture wala, and the same story repeated: 3 nails came out of the tyre, when I expected none. I recalled what they do - While one chap checks the air pressure, either another accomplise pushes in a nail, or they manipulate the pressure gauge to show a low pressure and they need to check the tyre.
By the time you realize, they remove the tyre and fill pressure up to 60 PSI. Then they bounce the tyre and make a manual check by rotating the tyre in front of you. Within a minute, you get to see 3 nails more or less at the same place. Charge for fixing a puncture - Rs 200. There is bonus too - they spoil the value too - and then charge Rs 400 for it. What is suspicious : It is always 3 nails at the same place. The value always gets damaged. The place where I got it checked is in the Mundawa road that connects Koregaon Park to Kharadi. Theere are 3 punture walas, one near the Mundawa juntion, another 2 opposite to the petrol bunks on the road (HP and IO). Solution: (I am not a salesman : I have purchased a China made air pump from reliance auto. I see the same products in Pune Mirror/Times of India advs as well as ebay.in Next plan for me: I plan to buy the punture kit from ebay.in. How do I plan to experiment on the punture kit: The punturewala cut the side of tyre to get more money, so I use that wheel as a spare and follow the 4 wheel rotation.
Please proceed with Caution when you check your tyre pressure with local puncture walas. 0 members liked this post 24-Nov, 2010 09:45 AM It always pays to build friendly relations with one of the puncturewallahs on the way to office or some other route you frequent. I have one such guy, and I keep him in good humor by filling air mostly from his compressor (5Rs once in a month or two is not bad). Two times I have seen a screw/nail in the tread, and gone to him, he has taken it off, only to find that the screw did not reach deep enough to cause any puncture. Charge - 20 bucks. The Puncture kit itself costs about 200 bucks, and gets you 5 fixes. That leaves you with no incentive to do repairs yourself. A tubeless tyre does not bleed as fast as a tubed one, so if you suspect a puncture, just take it to your trusted puncturewallah, and he will fix the puncture for the same money you would spend fixing it yourself. That said, going independent in puncture fixes is always a good thing, and I carry a kit and pump myself.
Only that I don't propose to use the kit unless I am stranded in the middle of nowhere, with a punctured wheel staring in my face. 24-Nov, 2010 03:24 PM yes, I did find one more "reputed" shop near my office. He sells tyres so will not bother to do gain much out of puncturing tyres. I put this as a warning since I would like to warn people in Pune who travel on the Mundawa-Bypass road on the way to Kharadi NOT to check at these places. I have several other of my friends who "found out" nails in their tyres when they visit to check tyre pressure. 24-Nov, 2010 03:45 PM Having stayed in Wanawadi for ~2 years, I am now glad that I left Pune! However, finding nails in tyres is not really always a result of a malicious act. The nails get lodged and yet almost no pressure loss happens because the nails effectively seal the puncture, and you can plan your visit to the puncturewallah. This luxury is not available to vehicles sporting tubed tyres. 16-Jul, 2011 05:27 PM
I am sorry not to be in the forum for a long time, however an update on this: This mence of Punturewalas in Pune is becoming a big issue. Now that most societies near Mundhwa/KP road know about the street cheats, they come into the society to damage the tyres. People of Pune, please dont get your tyres checked at the road from Magarpatta City to Mundhwa to KP and Bund gardern. Most the punture walas - are all cheats. Esp the" shed" ones. Only visit a punturewala who has the punture sign board and cost sheet - when I went to one of them, that guy just filled air and did not damage my tyres. I dont know if that guy was not interested to make too much money. My perference is always to get air checked from petrol pumps or for tyre check-up visit a shop that sells tyres. Most of the cheat ones are outsiders and not localites. I asked a local "marathi" punturewala on how these outsiders are doing business - well, they have the support of local political goons. 18-Jul, 2011 11:43 AM
Good thread to share my experience. I work in Hinjewadi IT park in Pune. On the road to Kothrud, just before the Wakad flyover, a new petrol pump has just set-up. Last week I had been there to fill-up petrol in my i10. I normally check the air pressure in the tyres everytime I fill-up the petrol at the station. I filled up the petrol and took my car for checking the air. Since it was raining, I didn't get down. The boy started with the rear wheel of the left side where I have least visibility. Normally, it takes hardly a minute to check the air pressure but he took a long time which created a doubt in my mind. I came out of the car and checked,he immdly started telling me that there is a puncture in the tyre and that too on the side surface just near the valve and told me that the nearby puncturewala will get it done for you. I had heard of such incidences in the past and was sure that the boy has done this mischief but had no proof.  I didn't wait there and asked him to just fillup the air.
I went to my regular puncturewala and to surprise, he found 5 punctures in that area. He told me that this is a common practice nowadays and they use some pointed object for the purpose while filling up the air. Couple of things I learned. Never fillup the air at unknown place. Evenif you do so, make sure that you are out of your car immdly and check personally while the boy fills up the air. 18-Jul, 2011 06:57 PM Thanks for your experiences. The worst problem is these street-cheats punture the sideof a tubeless tyre making it dangerous to use them. We have fied a complaint in the local police station and no action is taken against this racket. Unfortunatly, there is no hard proof. 20-Jul, 2011 02:00 PM I too have no trust on puncturewalas. So I always came out of my car and see how they fill the air. This will also make me sure that these people will fit the wheel covers correctly as I saw some do need to remove the wheel cover to fill the air. 30-Sep, 2011 04:24 PM
thank you for enlightening me in this regard. I have been the victim of such a thing in the last 3 - 4 months  ( 18 punctures  on my car as well as bike !!!!   You are abolutely right about all the techniques and trick these people are using . to add to it they will distract you by talking about how "bad" every other puncturewala is , and how checkinig pressure at a pump is useless as it never works. Another point i have observed is that : when they check pressure for the first time the gauge shows full , they remove the guage quickly when you ask for them to check again they somehow manipulate it to show almost no air ! I was at my wits end as to how to solve this , even starting to suspect people ,  now i am aware thanks to you . Also i have been charged from 60 Rs to 150 Rs for a bike puncture , and upto 540 for a valve !!!! these guiys just destroy the tyre and then charge you a fortune to mend it . Any suggestions to a trustworthy puncture man in mundhwa , magarpatta area ?
