Masters Program in Computer Science! Below you will find detailed information needed to start the program. Please read through everything carefully. If you have any questions, please reach out to us at masters-admin@cs.uchicago.edu. All communications prior to your start of the program will be sent to our masters-admitted mail list. Please make sure you are signed up for this list with an email address you check frequently. All students in the MPCS are required to sign the Academic Honesty & Plagiarism Statement before they begin their studies.  You will sign the statement at the new student orientation.  For more information on the academic honesty policy please read the MPCS Academic Honesty Guidelines. The UChicago Card is the official University identification card. You can use it for many things, including getting access to department buildings, the Library and checking out library materials, storing credit for dining hall use (for students), and riding certain CTA buses.
Students are required to have a UChicago. You can get your ID card from the ID & Privileges office. You will need to take a photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport to show proof of identity. Once you get your UChicago card send a photo of the front and back side of the card to Karin Czaplewski.  She will give you access to the MPCS building, Young Memorial. Your access is only active during the quarters you are registered. Your CNetID (Chicago Network Identifier) is a username that you select and will use to access most online services at the University of Chicago. Your email address at the University of Chicago contains your CNetID. Popular services such as wireless, cMore, Chalk, Wiki, file storage, and campus email all use your CNetID and password for access. To create your account a student ID number is required.  Your student ID number will be sent to you after April 15th. Create your CNetID and password. Employer-Sponsor Payment Option (ESPO), a payment plan, to qualified students who receive tuition reimbursement by their employers.
The ESPO recognizes the employer sponsorship as pending payment. Students enrolled in the ESPO are allowed to defer payment of their tuition during the current quarter but are expected to settle their bill within 3 weeks after the end of the quarter. Information about graduate student housing is available at the UGrad website.  Other graduate student housing in Hyde Park and in the City of Chicago include the MAC Properties and Regents Parks. All students are required to have health insurance.  The SHCS website includes details information about the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP) as well as supplemental health care options that are available for purchase by University of Chicago students. You can enroll or waive U-SHIP coverage online. If you already have health insurance through another provider, it is very important that you waive U-SHIP or you will be enrolled in the plan automatically and responsible for the cost.

Welcome to the MPCS! We would like to know more about you. Within a week of the beginning of your start-date, you will receive an email with the MPCS New Student Survey. Students who complete the survey will receive a MPCS t-shirt at the new student orientation. The OIA is available to answer any questions you may have whether you’re on a student or work visa. MPCS Autumn Quarter Orientation The MPCS will host two new student orientations for the Autumn 2016 quarter.  Students who are starting in the Autumn 2016 quarter are required to attend one session.  The first session is on Wednesday, September 21st at 1pm.  The second session is on Monday, September 26th at 3pm.  Please complete the registration form. The UChicagoGrad office will host a campus wide graduate student orientation on Tuesday, September 20th.  Students aren’t required to attend this orientation.  
However, it could be beneficial to you if you’re planning to be on campus as a full-time student.  This event is also open to students who started in the Summer quarter.  Students must complete the registration form. Students who have a solid background in prigramming and/or Discrete Math can waive the prerequisite courses by taking placement exams at the start of studies. Exams are usually offered before the start of each quarter. Dates are published below as they are determined. Please complete the placement exam registration form to secure your space in the exam. We will have several exam sessions per day.  Students will be assigned to a session based on their enrollment.  Full-time students will take their exams during the day sessions.  Part-time student will take their exams during the late afternoon/early evening sessions. Autumn Quarter   -----     Monday, September 26, 2016 Winter Quarter      -----     Tuesday, January 3, 2017 The MPCS administration must approve your registration requests.  Please complete the registration form only after you have received the results of your placement exams.  After you've taken your placement exam you will receive an email with your results, the registration form and instructions. The University student portal is myUChicago. The portal allows you to access your student information and a wide range of online University resources. Once you have your cNetID you can log in to confirm your personal information.  You must confirm your personal information before the end of the first week in your first quarter. The Unix bootcamp is mandatory for all students in the MPCS.  Unless you’ve taken the prerequisite course, MPCS 50101 Concepts of Programming, you must attend the bootcamp.
