Miami Ironside is an urban art and design district located in Miami's Upper Eastside, off of the MiMo Historic Biscayne Boulevard and nearby Palm Grove. The stretch of industrial warehouses was acquired in 2003 by local developer Ofer Mizrahi, and envisioned as an interconnected network of mixed-purpose architectural complexes, creating a unique, ever-evolving ecological creative node within the fabric of Miami. An extension of the development is the Miami Art Space Gallery, located in the Wynwood Art District. On the facade of the building is the iconic mural painting "Confetti" by artist Kenneth Treister. It is home to over 65 designer showrooms,[2] art galleries, architecture firms, creative services, eateries, residences, multi-purpose spaces, and a public piazza with permanent Berlin Wall sculptures painted by street artist Thierry Noir.[3] Twice a year, Ironside hosts a Campus Collective.
A popular community event, tenants open their doors to the public for a night of creativity, music and refreshments. Beginning in 1998, Miami Ironside developer Ofer Mizrahi was an active leader in the revitalization of the Miami Design District community, and also where he opened his first design showroom. In 2001, he started extending his efforts to the revitalization of a brownfield in Wynwood. This site was renovated and launched as the Miami Art Space Gallery in 2007. In 2003, he began acquiring the stretch of industrial warehouses that runs alongside the railroad tracks from 73rd St. to 79th St. NE, at the northend of the Little River Industrial Park, transforming them into contemporary mixed-use developments: showrooms, studios, and office spaces. The site was coined Miami Ironside in early 2008, steming from its location next to the iron railroad tracks as well as the use of iron throughout the renovation and design of the complexes. In 2007, Mizrahi was nominated for the March of Dimes “Building Our Community Award” for “Community Excellence in Architecture & Engineering.”
Miami Ironside's architectural design is similar to that of a European village concept, with connected pathways leading pedestrians from one building to the next, creating a modern-day pattern-language to exemplify green strategies in the renovation of a warehouse complex: Ironside, to house and showcase creative eco-preneurs who want to be a part of a contemporary concept for a live-work community of like-minded designers, artist, creatives and businesses. Wall Street Journal refers to Mizhari as a pioneer in the community with regard to ‘seeing the value’ of eco-friendly construction materials. And in so doing, single-handedly turning businesses around to set new standards in “green” architecture and design.
