One particularly exciting moment was when it came time to ford across a treacherous looking stream that was probably the temperature of ice water, only a lot colder. Land Rover’s parka-clad army of helpers waved me onward, with assurance that all would be well, and a reminder to keep my speed quick enough (though not TOO quick) to maintain a wake in front of the truck. Inching the Discovery Sport into the water, it slid a moment and an excruciatingly loud “bang!” came from something up front. Whatever it was, it sounded big, heavy, and awfully important. The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport test drive in Iceland didn't lack for excitement, or stunning landscapes. Fresh from the water crossing and, thankfully, with all four doors firmly shut. Unlike the two or four-door Evoque, the Discovery Sport is only available with four doors and rear cargo hatch. And to think, these weren't even the worst roads the Discovery Sport had to contend with during our test drive in Iceland. In base trim, the Discovery Sport is currently Land Rover's least expensive model sold in the U.S.

All of the Discovery Sports were fitted with Pirelli Ice Zero studded tires to cope with the extreme weather conditions. Approaching the water crossing with the help of Land Rover's parka-clad army of helpers pointing the way. Our test vehicle was fitted with British plates and equipped in the range-topping HSE Luxury trim level that starts at $46,545. The Discovery Sport has much of the styling swagger of the Evoque, but is more user-friendly when it comes to everyday driving and cabin space. “Game over,” I told my now wide-eyed driving partner. Except that no one outside of the Discovery Sport seemed the least bit excited, much less interested or concerned about this half-submerged, British-built sport-ute. So, already nose first in a stream that looked like something from a Coors beer commercial, we inched onward and into the churning water. At this exact moment, I remembered taking photos of the Land Rover before our icy plunge. Problem being, I didn’t quite recall whether or not I’d firmly shut the driver’s door when hopping back inside.

Unlike the initial moment of dread that I shared with my co-pilot, I kept this wee bit of uncertainty to myself. READ ABOUT OTHER LAND ROVER MODELS. With my left leg pressed against the door panel seam, I kept the Discovery Sport moving forward while simultaneously waiting to abandon ship should I feel a torrent of Icelandic water come streaming onto my khakis. It was nearly three hours into the drive before we spotted another car - one that wasn't a new Discovery Sport - on the road. On the highway, the Discovery Sport should return fuel economy in the mid-20 mpg range. Proof that this was definitely not your everyday SUV test drive. At last, daybreak and the hint of clear skies ahead during the Discovery Sport test drive. When push came to shove (or plow), Land Rover always had a back-up plan to cope with anything Iceland had to offer. Lined up for an early pit-stop to refuel (with coffee) before setting back out to conquer the Icelandic wilderness. The Discovery Sport's LED headlights were put to good use, considering the sun didn't fully rise until nearly 11 a.m.

Who says media drives are nothing but fancy dinners and luxury hotel rooms? (To my relief, my door was most definitely shut tight.) In quieter moments, during those times when I didn’t feel like I was about to join Jack and Rose in the final scenes of ‘”Titanic,” the Discovery Sport is an exceptionally refined and handsome SUV. This is basically a larger, more practical take on the current Evoque crossover. In two or four-door format, the Evoque looks like a million bucks thanks to its swept-back lines and gun turret-like greenhouse. That show-car shape doesn’t make for the roomiest of interiors, however. Enter the Discovery Sport, which is 9 inches longer than the Evoque and now comes with an available third-row seat. With the exception of a few details - like a smallish touch-screen and cheap-looking vents - the cabin of the Discovery Sport is comfortable and matter-of-fact. On the road and headed to...umm. Silver colored trim helps to break up the expanses of black surfaces on the dashboard. Under the hood is a 240-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This is the same motor found in the Evoque, but it's far quieter and less coarse in the new Discovery Sport. A rotary knob controls the 9-speed automatic transmission. From behind the wheel, the Discovery Sport immediately feels reassuring and light on its feet, despite the bigger dimensions and heavier curb-weight compared to the more petite Evoque. The handling felt accurate and unflappable, which was hugely important on a day’s route that included snow, ice, gravel, mud and, hallelujah, some actual paved roads too. When it comes to powertrain, the choice is simple: all three trim levels of the Discovery Sport come with a 240-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, 9-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel-drive. This is what you’ll find in the Evoque, except that the Discovery Sport adds another layer of smoothness – that extra weight also includes more sound-deadening materials.

Despite currently being Land Rover’s least expensive offering, with a starting price of $38,045 (including destination charge), the dynamics never feel cut-rate. In fact, the mix of ride and handling feels exactly like what Land Rover wants the Discovery Sport to be; a scaled-up and more grown-up version of the Evoque. That quality is felt in the cabin materials, which straddle a nice line between genteel country-estate and an airy downtown loft apartment. I generally liked the black and brown cabin of my test vehicle, especially once the Icelandic sun finally decided to rise around 11 a.m. Silver accents liven up the straightforward dashboard and no-nonsense center console. The latter has the expected cascading lineup of touch-screen infotainment, air vents, controls for heating and ventilation, followed by a row of buttons governing a fuel saving stop-start system, Eco driving mode, and buttons to adjust the Land Rover’s drive settings for snow, gravel, and hilly terrain. The Discovery Sport offers about 19 cu. ft. of cargo room with the second row seats in place.

Since our test vehicle wasn't fitted with the optional third row, our first attempt to determine third-row leg and headroom was decidedly informal (and snug). The Discovery Sport's panoramic roof provided spectacular views of the Icelandic landscape. The rear cargo area with the second row seats folded forward. A very smart touch: these buttons in the cargo area electronically fold down the second row seats. Finally, we found a Discovery Sport with a third-row seat. After clambering over the folded second row, we finally squeezed our way into these small seats. Even for kids, these aren't very practical or useful. Going in that same order, I felt the touch-screen a little too small and the vents a bit too cheap looking. On a plus point, the doors close with a solid ‘thunk,’ and I’m a fan of the rotary knob that controls the automatic gearbox – though I do wish it would dramatically raise and lower, like the system used in Jaguars. Space in the second row is ample, especially when you slide the 60:40 split seats backwards along their full 6.3 inches of travel.

The second row also has a recline function. As for the third-row seats, well, they’re awkward to get into and even worse to sit in. If you’re big enough to step over the folded second row seats to get into them, then you’re going to be miserable once back there. And if you’re tiny enough not to mind the lack of legroom, you’re going to need mom or dad to hoist you back there in the first place. Back to driving and the question of value, the Land Rover Discovery Sport should make a noticeable impact in the luxury SUV market. It’s not as brash as an Evoque, but it’s still very handsome and is definitely more practical for hauling (five) people and cargo. Skip the third row and toss on a set of optional alloy wheels, if you really want that extra dash of exterior pizzazz. If it can conquer these conditions, life in the city, or the suburbs, should be no problem for the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport. Overall, the Discovery Sport’s quieter ride, composed driving dynamics, and that Land Rover badge gravitas all add up to a luxury SUV purchase that makes a lot of sense.
