Experts say they could have been sold online in a new trend called "pet flipping" — when a criminal steals an animal and quickly sells it. The Chinese Shar-Pei, known for its deep wrinkles and hippopotamus head shape, is considered a rare designer breed in the U.S."You can easily get $2,000 for a well-bred Shar-Pei on Craigslist," said Sean Hawkins, philanthropy and marketing director at Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. The two older dogs were named Porsha and Versace.Detectives released photos of the dogs in hopes that anyone who has seen them will report their whereabouts to the sheriff's office. "The case is still active an open," sheriff's office spokeswoman Jane Watrel said. Meanwhile, Jaclyn "Jaki" Maldonado, 22, and Samantha Rivera, 21, have been charged with burglary, criminal mischief and grand theft in connection with the Sept. 5 break-in. Maldonado remains in Orange County Jail. Rivera has bonded out. Maldonado has prior arrests for prostitution in Orange County, and a relative of the dogs' owner told deputies Maldonado is featured on an escort website.

According to witnesses, the women were regulars at the single-family home on Little Econ Street, just east of Dean Road."They have been there many times before," an incident report said.The dogs' owner, Juan Jose Sapeg, 33, wasn't home the day of the crime.He was — and still is — in Orange County Jail on a long list of charges, including drug trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia.But Sapeg claimed he knew exactly who stole his pets, valued at $6,000, records show.Investigators showed him the security camera video, and he quickly identified Maldonado and Rivera. He filed papers from jail to prosecute them."He stated that he had hung out with them over 20 times and recognized them 100 percent," deputies wrote.According to his ex-girlfriend, who reported the dogs missing, the women took advantage of Sapeg's absence. She's been checking online daily for anyone selling the dogs.Sapeg was arrested on Aug. 29. His ex-girlfriend, who asked not to be identified out of fear of retribution, went to his house every day to check on the dogs, feeding and playing with them.
